Misleading messages in US toxic releases.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been criticised for making misleading statements regarding emissions of toxic chemicals.

The EPA claims that the amount of toxic chemicals released into the environment fell by 4% from 2003 to 2004, and that since 1998, the amount of toxic chemicals released has declined 45%. But the US National Environment Trust (NET) said that despite the EPA's attempt to 'emphasise the positive,' the EPA Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) shows that toxic releases increased in three major industrial sectors; paper, the food industry and from petroleum refineries.
